Charles Paddock was a county park ranger who cared for sick animals and nursed them back to health. His collection of animals outgrew the animal shelter. They moved to this site in 1963. In 1979 when the city of Atascadero took over management of the park. Atascadero renamed the zoo after Charles Paddock. The zoo is accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association. Many zoos are licensed by the federal government but only a few are honored with this accreditation!
The zoo sits on about 5 acres of land. There are about 25 different exhibits to enjoy. It's a great place to take kids as it's small enough to hold their attention!
