Long Description:This is a Viquesney's Spirit of the Doughboy Statue located in a
small, corner park in Matawan, NJ. The statue is placed at the edge
of the park near the intersection of Main and Broad Street.
The front of the memorial says:
Matawan Honor Roll
In memory of those who
Served Their Country
In the World War
1917-1919
The front of the plaque also contains the names of over 150
soldiers from Matawan who served in WWI.
A second plaque has been placed on the side of the monument.
This plaque has been added to the statue to honor the residents of
Matawan Borough who served and gave their lives in WWII and the
Korean War.
While I was gathering photos for this waymark, a gentleman
stopped and asked me what my interest was in the monument. When I
explained what I was doing, he stepped to the left side of the
plaque and pointed to the name Michael Collins. He said, "I am Bill
Collins. Michael Collins was my father and he served in World War
I." It was a touching moment to hear this man speak of his father.
He also pointed to a few additional names on the monument of men
whose children he had been with in school.
