This bridge, originally opened in 1913, was the final link in a spur linking the old Southern Pacific mainline in Salem and the lumber and mining center of Falls City. Over time the line was less used until the right-of-way started to be sold in the 1990s. The City of Salem acquired the bridge for public use in 2005, and the trail opened in May, 2009. The trail continues to Wallace Rd., giving a total length of about half a mile, and there is a spur trail on the west side of the bridge into Wallace Marine Park. Since the opening the trail has been averaging several thousand people crossing the river per day either by foot or bicycle.
