Built by Lawrence Washington in 1743, the house was inherited by George Washington in 1761. Under his ownership the house was enlarged by adding a second story and wings for the dining room and study to the mansion. In warm weather, the Washingtons would relax with their guests on the piazza overlooking the Potomac River.
The house appears to be built of stone but it actually sided with wooden planks covered in a mixture of paint and sand in a process called "rustication."
It is said that Mount Vernon is the most often imitated building in America. Reproductions of the mansion with its distinctive piazza can be found as homes, banks, restaurants and other buildings across the country.
