The castle's construction started in 1582, during the kingdom of D. Filipe I (Filipe II of Spain), who went to Setúbal to see personally the beggining of the works. Italian architects - Filippo Terzi, and then Leonardo Torriani - were responsible for the architectural plan.
During the kingdom of D. João IV (1640-1656), a new exterior wall was added, increasing the size of the castle. This new structure allowed a better defense of the Sado River's estuary.
Nowadays, a luxury hotel (pousada) is located inside the castle, and it serves as a great lookut point towards the city of Setúbal and the Sado River.
