The Chicago & Rock Island Railroad spanned the nation and passed through Colorado Springs. A local historic society representative estimates that this bridge was built in the late 1890's and rebuilt in the summer of 1931 after a flood damaged it. The bridge spans the west fork of Sand Creek and the railbed that it used to connect to has now been incorporated into the national Rails to Trails program.

Coincidently the trail is called The Rock Island Trail.
