The Saugatuck Engine House and Council Room was erected in 1879 to 1880 by Amos Gardner, James Williams, and Ralph Brittain. It originally featured vehicular entry doors and a tower, but was redesigned with Colonial Revival references by prominent local artist Carl Hoerman in 1926. A basement was excavated under the structure in 1929. The building served as the seat of municipal government, with the first floor occupied by an engine house and the second floor housing council chambers. The fire department moved to new quarters in 1953, but the building functions today as the Saugatuck City Hall.
