From its opening in 1893 through deactivation in 1944 to present day, the US Army facility known as Fort Ethan Allen has been a major influence on life in the Burlington area (most of Chittenden County).
Even today, with its Officers' Row Condominiums, student housing and support facilities for neighboring St. Michael's College, broadcast outlets (commercial stations, Vermont Public Radio and Vermont Public TV), a nursing home, state offices and various businesses, the area is known simply as "The Fort."
The entire thing is a National Historic District. A map, showing contributing and non-contributing buildings, is here.
