The new pier - built to accommodate the airport's increasing number of flight arrivals and departures and service larger aircraft like the Airbus A380 - is the first New Zealand building on track to be awarded LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification by the US Green Building Council, an independent organisation that verifies and certifies 'green' buildings throughout the world.
Pier B was gifted the name Kaiwhare by Tainui kaumatua who blessed the building before the arrival of the world's largest passenger jet Qantas’ 450-seat Airbus A380 at Auckland International Airport’s new A380-capable facility Pier B.
Iwi representatives also named the state-of-the-art airbridges in honour of long-serving airport staff from among their ranks.
Prime Minister Helen Clark opened Kaiwhare and commended Auckland International Airport on its "green" design.
The building includes environmentally friendly features like solar-powered lighting, rainwater recycling for air-conditioning systems and "low-flow" water conservation fittings.
The International Pier received 30 points – over and above the 26 points needed – by incorporating features such as rainwater harvesting, and solar energy for power and water heating.
