President Eisenhower first visited Gettysburg when studying the battlefield as a West Point cadet in 1915. During the First World War, he was appointed commander of Camp Colt, the US Army Tank Corps Training Center bringing him again to Gettysburg. After a long military career attaining the rank of five star general, the General and his wife chose Gettysburg as the place where they wished to retire. They bought this farm next to the Gettysburg Battlefield in 1950. Eisenhower was elected president in 1952, and he and Mamie used the farm as a respite from Washington and to entertain both friends and world leaders.
In 1961, the President and his wife retired to the farm. The President would work at his office at Gettysburg College, and he and Mamie would often visit in town to dine, shop or take in movies. President Eisenhower died in 1969. Mamie stayed at her home on the farm until her death in 1979. The Eisenhowers donated the property to the National Park Service in 1967, and the Historic Site was opened to visitors in 1980.
