Gallatin County was established in 1812 from a portion of Randolph County. The county is named for Albert Gallatin, a statesman and financier, Representative in Congress from Pennsylvania, Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, and Minister to France and England.

The current courthouse was built in 1939. The courthouse was built when the town of Shawneetown was moved about 3 miles due to repeated flooding of its original location on the Ohio River, with the catastrophic flood of 1937 the final decision was made for the move.
