Brandenburg's historic downtown is over 1,000 years old. In medieval times, the town was protected by a sturdy wall and seven watch towers, of which four have been preserved.

According to a stone plate in the foundation, the Stone Gate Tower was built in 1380. The first historical record of the tower dates back to the year 1433, when it was used as a prison. The tower is 107 ft (32.5 m) high and has a diameter of 36 ft (11m). Two third of the diameter go to the 11'07'' (3.35m) thick walls of the tower.

Today, the tower is a museum and is the only one of the four remaining towers that is accessible to the public.
