On the marker is written following text:

New York Marble Cemetery - Incorporated 1831
Enclosed within this block is the oldest non-sectarian cemetery in the City. Descendants of the 19th century owners may still be buried here. The 156 solid marble vaults were built completely underground as a health precaution. Though no markers are on the ground, names of the original owners from each family are on marble tablets in the surrounding walls. The cemetery is a New York City Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

This small (0.5 acre area) but very interesting cemetery should not be confused with the nearby New York City Marble Cemetery which is entirely separate and established one year later

The cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was designated a New York City Landmark in 1969. Around 2100 burials are recorded in the Cemetery's written registers, most from prominent professional and merchant families in New York City.
