The plaque reads:
"Civil War Cannon "Nellie Grant"
A memorial to those Union soldiers who fought and gave their lives for the preservation of the Union. Given by early McGregor Banker Samuel Merrill, former Governor of Iowa 1868-1872. This six pounder bronze field gun weighing 888 pounds, model 1841 - Army registry no. 504, was manufactured in 1856 by the Ames Co. of Chicopee, Mass. It was accepted for payment on Dec. 29, 1858. Its service history is unknown. The cannon is named for the daughter of General Ulysees S. Grant.
Restored and rededicated July 5, 2002"
