The Coos Bay Library was one of more than 2,500 Carnegie Libraries built around the beginning of the 20th century with funds from industrialist Andrew Carnegie. Fundraising to build a library for Coos Bay began in 1906; the Coos Bay Progress Club was an important early supporter. Construction was completed in 1915. The library building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
After the Coos Bay Public Library moved to a new building a few blocks away, the old Carnegie Library building was used at various times over the years as an armory, an art museum, a residence, and as the home for a youth organization. The Coos Bay Carnegie Library is currently in private hands as the future home of the Bella Art School.
