As listed on Historic Hotels of America website (link), "The General Morgan Inn... takes its name from the Confederate leader whose daring raids into the upper Midwest terrorized the Union Army during the Civil War. Legend has that General John Hunt Morgan, the “Thunderbolt of the Confederacy,” tried to escape and was shot and killed in September 1864--today’s inn marks the exact spot his body fell."
Per a nearby TN historical marker, "The Grand Central was constructed as a "railroad hotel," from 1887 to 1890. From 1908 to 1981, it was operated as Hotel Brumley. Carefully restored under the supervision of seven historic preservation agencies, including the National Trust for Historic Preservation, it reopened in 1996 as the General Morgan Inn."
