The Chemawa School was founded in the 1880s, with a mission to integrate Indians into Anglo society through education. The students were taught various trades, along with general studies. But this was not the most well funded of schools, given the prevailing attitude that they were elevating savages. So quality medical care was at a premium, and on several occasions there were disease outbreaks. Those who perished, and could not be returned to their families were laid to rest here. There are 198 known grave sites here.
