[FR] C'est aux IIe et IIIe siècles après Jésus-Christ que fut construit, à l'emplacement du forum, un ensemble semi-souterrain de vaste taille. Composé de trois grandes galeries principales disposées en U. Chacune est voûtée, soutenue par des piliers carrés.
Un cryptoportique est une galerie souterraine voûtée, en usage dans l'antiquité romaine, généralement implantée pour soutenir ou pour compenser des dénivellations de terrain d'un monument important, comme on peut le constater dans les forums des provinces romaines, à partir du Haut Empire (Ier et IIe siècles après J.-C.).
En dehors de son utilité purement architecturale, le cryptoportique pouvait servir aux usages les plus divers mettant à profit son obscurité et sa fraîcheur 1) ajouré sur ses côtés pour assurer un certain éclairement et décoré, il servait de promenade couverte aux heures chaudes 2) réserve assurant la protection de certaines denrées périssables tel que la viande ou le blé par exemple
[EN] In Ancient Roman architecture a cryptoporticus (from Latin crypta and porticus) is a covered corridor or passageway. The cryptoportico is a semi-subterranean gallery whose vaulting supports portico structures aboveground and which is lit from openings at the tops of its arches. On sloping sites the cryptoporticus is often partially at ground level and supports a structure such as a forum or Roman villa, in which case it served as basis villae.
Today, only the Eastern part of the cryptoportico of Reims remains, but it is unusually well preserved for a Gallo-Roman structure.
