The Fort (also called Fort Frederick and Fort George) was one of many built along the coast during the early 1700’s
to protect themajor shipping ports of Jamaica from invasion by French and Spanish forces and pirates that roamed
around the Caribbean Sea.
In 1752 the Fort was reported to be in very poor condition, and historian Edward Long reported
that in 1760 one of the guns exploded killing the gunner while the Fort was celebrating the British capture of Havana.
In 1779 the fort underwent major reconstruction. It was was then that the platform, parapet wall, paving and new powder keg were built.
The fort did not see much military action, but the cannons and guns were fired more often to celebrate the British Monarchs birthday, or the visit to Montego Bay of important persons such as the Governor.
Much of the area in and around the fort is now a Craft market, selling crafts, t-shirts and souvenirs. The old fort well is in the center of the craft market. The powder keg building is nearby.
