The memorial was constructed from 1968 to 1971 by the family of 1st Lieutenant David Westphal. LT Westphal was one of sixteen Marines who were killed in an ambush at Con Thien, Vietnam in May, 1968. This memorial is considered to be the first major Vietnam War memorial in the United States. The site and memorial received wide attention in the 1970s and is considered to have helped to inspire the National Vietnam War Memorial in Washington D.C. In 1987 the US Congress recognized Angel Fire as a memorial of national significance. Angel Fire is indeed a special memorial that evokes very deep feelings in those who visit it. The visitors center contains photographs, flags, memorabilia, and other items related to the war. Particularly significant are the collection of photographs and biography's of many of the 58,198 who lost their lives during the war. Within the memorial is a chapel that remains open 24x7 for visitors to offer their respects or reflect in a quiet and peaceful refuge dedicated to those who served and those who died on our behalf.
