The miniature railroad originated as a gift for Dresden children on the occassion of International Children's Day, June 1st 1950. However, the children were not very happy as the railroad was fully run by adults. The children desired to run the railroad themselves, such as young "pioneers" in the Soviet Union. A group of children were therefore trained as conductors or dispatchers, and they took over the railroad on May 1st 1951. Only five grown-up railroad workers were left to assist them. At the same time, the railroad was extended and several railroad stations were constructed.
In 1990, the "Pioniereisenbahn Dresden" was renamed into the present state. It operates as a round trip through the Volkspark Großer Garten. Passengers can board at any of the five stations. Trains run at intervals of approximately 15 to 30 minutes, every year from May to October.
