This cottage-style screwpile lighthouse, is illuminated by a 4th order Fresnel lens with a fixed white light. This lighthouse is the fourth to carry the Roanoke Marshes Light moniker, three of which were located off-shore on the southern end of Roanoke Island in Croatan Sound.
The first Roanoke Marshes Light went into service in 1831. The predecessor of this most recent light was decommissioned in 1955 but a replacement was not planned until the centennial celebration of the Town of Manteo in 1999. The current lighthouse was dedicated in 2004.
The North Carolina Maritime Museum on Roanoke Island operates the lighthouse as part of its facilities.
