From the Dedication on Page (a): "On September 24, 1904, at about 10:00AM Southern Railway passenger train No. 12 Carolina Special that originated in Chattanooga, left Knoxville and traveled eastward 23 miles to a sudden head on (butting) collision at speed with local passenger train No. 15 from Bristol." The book includes interviews with a few participating survivors, details about the trains, area, and investigation into the possible cause.
Page 6-11 shows the wreck site to be northeast of the coordinates (which are the closest public view point) in the farm land nearer to Lost Creek. The new double-track removed some of the bend in this stretch of railroad.
