The marker reads:
Welcome to historic Hukilau Beach
huki - "to pull"
lau - "fish net with ti leaf"
From 1948 to 1971, this site was a popular tourist attraction. Tourists could participate in the hukilau, eat at a luau, buy handmade arts and crafts, and watch the dances of Polynesia. These events led to the creation of the world famous "Hukilau" song.
The Hukilau was conceived as a fundraising venue by local members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) to help build a chapel in the community. This chapel still stands in the community today as a tribute to the past and present residents of Laie.

HUKILAU
What a beautiful day for fishing
the old Hawaiian way
And the hukilau net were swishing
down at old Laie Bay
Oh, we're going to a Hukilau
A huki huki huki Hukilau
Everybody loves the Hukilau
Where the laulau is the kaukau
at the big luau
We throw our nets
out into the sea
and all the 'ama 'ama
come swimming to me.
Oh we're going, to a hukilau,
A huki, huki, huki,
huki, huki, huki, hukilau
Written and composed by Jack Owens
Further information: The former chapel mentioned above was made of wood. It needed to be rebuilt because it burned down in 1947. It did not require 20 years to rebuild the chapel. The hukilau continued because the tourist industry asked that the community of La‘ie to continue as a visitor attraction. The hukilau was discontinued in 1971, when the state determined that, as a commercial endeavor, it needed to be taxed. The community found the hukilau was not sufficiently profitable to continue.
