Now a designated nature preserve, local island history knows this sandy hummock of knarly live oaks as Teach's Plantation, shores which were once occupied by the legendary pirate Blackbeard and his band of bloodthirsty cutthroats and freebooters.

Located just a stone's throw away from Teach's Hole, Blackbeard's favorite anchorage, this area proved to be a favorite hideaway for his pirate crew. Legend holds that Blackbeard's treasure lies buried beneath the dunes of this area.

And it was within site of Springer's Point on November 22, 1718, where the vastly outmanned crew of cutthroats were set upon by a larger crew hired by the governor of Virginia to stop acts of piracy in the area. After a bloody battle, Blackbeard was killed and beheaded here off the shores of Ocracoke Island.
