The Cape Mendocino Lighthouse was built on the most westerly point on Califoria. It was lit in 1868. It is concidered one of the tallest; even though it was on a 43 feet tower it was constructed 422' above sea level. In 1951, it was automated and all of the other structures on the site were burned to the ground. In 1998, the Cape Mendocino Lighthouse was moved to Shelter Cove, California, 30 miles south of the original site. It was restored and opened to the public in 2000. The Fresnel light is on display at the entrance to the Ferndale, California, County Fair Grounds.
