Located in Kingbury County, South Dakota, DeSmet has a population of 1,055 as of July 2007, a 9 percent decrease from the 2000 census.
It is the county seat of Kingsbury County and is made up of German, Norwegian, Irish, English, Danish, and Dutch peoples.
It was incorporated in 1883.

Visit Lake Thompson, just eight miles east of De Smet, South Dakota's largest natural lake. It's an angler's haven with walleye, perch and northern pike. The De Smet area also offers the best pheasant hunting in east central South Dakota.
De Smet also offers many unique shops on Main Street, midwestern hospitality at a wide selection of restaurants and lodging options that include, camping, hotels and bed & breakfasts.
