August Schell was born in the Black Forest region of Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1848, when he was 20 years old. In 1856 he joined with a group of Cincinnati Turners to help found the city of New Ulm. Lamenting the lack of good beer in New Ulm, Schell partnered with Jacob Bernhardt to found a brewery in 1860. Schell became sole owner in 1866, and the brewery has remained in the hands of his descendants ever since.
Schell Brewery is known today for producing excellent beers, including many traditional German styles. The brewery continues to hold its own in an industry dominated by conglomerates and mass brewers. The brewery acknowledges its German roots by retaining German names for stations of the brew house, such as the "Fass Fullerei."
