The 792-foot (241-meter) tall IDS Center was designed by Phillip Johnson and was opened in 1972.

The design of the IDS Center allows each floor 32 corner offices instead of the typical four and column-free interiors allowing tenants the maximum flexibility for their office space. Because of this success, the Phillip Johnson and the other IDS Center architects received an Honor Award for Design from the American Institute of Architects in 1975.

Two stories of mechanical floors about 50 feet (15 meters) above street level may surprise visitors with a mysterious gap while riding the elevators between the eighth and ninth floors. This area is easily seen from street level.
