This wonderful Cowboy Muffler Man can be seen standing several yards from the Ute Highway 66 between Longmont and Lyons at North 63rd St.
In the comic strip, Bill Griffith has Zippy trying to console the Muffler Man as he stands in a yard holding a vacuum cleaner part. In real life, the Muffler Man is holding a pitchfork. I guess the picture that Griffith was going by had the forks obscured by the tree he stands next to.
The "Giant Ranch Hand," or "Big Cowboy," is owned by the DeVries family since 2000. He used to represent a tool and machine parts shop before he was placed on the front lawn of the DeVries home. He's dressed like a farmer and is now holding a pitchfork (not a vacuum cleaner part) to represent the hay business of the Lazy "T" Ranch.
Although recently, he looks as though he took a tumble due to weather, as part of his hat is crushed and missing on the left side. There are now several wires holding him in place to prevent any more falls.
