Monroe county became a county in 1816 from a portions of St. Clair and Randolph counties. Waterloo became the county seat in 1825. The courthouse was originally built 1852-53 with additions of the wings in 1903. The original courthouse was designed by Lloyd Prather. The courthouse was further expanded in recent years.
