The
Point Bonita Lighthouse has been in operation since 1855. Access to the lighthouse is by a one half mile long footpath. In 1937 a rock slide destroyed the final segment of trail to get to the lighthouse. A wooden causeway was built to bridge the gap until the early 1950's when a 155 foot long suspension bridge was built to cross the gap in the trail.
The wooden bridge also has reinforcing cables running along the side to dampen sideways motion. Since high winds are the norm here at Point Bonita, only two people are allowed on the bridge at a time and then only if the winds are under 25 MPH.
