The San Francisco flag is a white flag, bordered in yellow. The central design depicts the crest of a Phoenix bird arising from a ring of fire, and the motto "Oro en Paz, Fierro en Guerra" (Gold in Peace, Iron in War). "San Francisco" is printed in blue across the lower portion of the white body of the flag. The original flag design was white with the central design, and a yellow fringe. When the flag was mass produced, the yellow fringe became part of the flag's design.

The phoenix was chosen as a symbol to commemorate a fire of 1852 which destroyed most of the then wooden city. In modern times, it is more generally recognized as representing San Francisco's rise from the ashes of the 1906 Earthquake.
