The Duke of Sully was a minister in the government of the French king Henry IV. His responsibility was a reform of the finances and organization of France and to this end, he traveled a lot. This tree marks the road between the cities of Moulins and Autun, important cities in the central/Burgundy region.

It is situated in the village of Gannay, on the banks of the Loire river.

The tree has died long ago. It has been reinforced by concrete as a means of conservation the remains and it has a tower type of roof on it to keep the water out.

The plaque reads:

arbre de Sully / Sully was named great envoy of Henry IV in 1597. This tree marked the route of Moulins Autun.
Location of the tree: on ther roadside, in front of a church

Type of tree: oak, telling by what little bark remains.
