[FR] Installée au tournant du « siècle des génocides », ouverte sur le siècle nouveau, cette institution neuve est un pont jeté entre les femmes et les hommes contemporains de la Shoah et ceux qui n'ont pas vécu, ni directement ni par la médiation de leurs parents, cette période historique.
Inscrit dans la continuité du CDJC et du Mémorial Juif du Martyr Inconnu, le Mémorial de la Shoah n'en constitue pas moins une nouvelle étape de la transmission de la mémoire et de l'enseignement de la Shoah, qui étaient jusqu'alors essentiellement portés par les témoins directs de l'extermination des Juifs d'Europe.
Pourquoi et comment « enseigner la Shoah » au XXIe siècle ? Ces questions sont au cœur de la mission du Mémorial, au cœur du travail des historiens, chercheurs comme formateurs, qui animent la vie de ce lieu de rencontre entre tous les publics, grand ouvert sur les nouvelles générations.
Centre de ressources, première archive d'Europe sur la Shoah, le Mémorial est aussi un « musée de la vigilance » conçu pour apprendre, comprendre et ressentir, parce qu'il est nécessaire de construire encore et toujours « un rempart contre l'oubli, contre un retour de la haine et le mépris de l'homme », selon les mots d'Eric de Rothschild, président du Mémorial.
[EN] Situated at this turning point of the "century of genocides", open to the new century, the new institution is intended as a bridge between the men and women who were contemporaries of the Shoah and those who did not experience this period of history, either directly or through the mediation of their parents.
Although it is a continuation of the CDJC and the Memorial to the Unknown Jewish Martyr, the Shoah Memorial is also a new phase in the transmission of the memory and the lessons of the Shoah, which so far had been essentially borne by the direct witnesses of the extermination of Jews of Europe.
Why and how should the Shoah be "taught" in the 21st century? Such issues are at the heart of the Memorial's mission, at the heart of the work of the historians, researchers and educators who come together here to be a source of inspiration open to all, ready to welcome the new generations.
The Memorial is a resource center, the first and foremost collection of archives on the Shoah in Europe, but it is also a "museum of vigilance", designed to learn, understand and experience, because now and forever it will always be necessary to construct "a rampart against oblivion, against a rekindling of hatred and contempt for man", to quote Eric de Rothschild, President of the Memorial.
