New Ulm was founded by German Turners from Cincinnati and Chicago, but they are not the only ethnic Germans to contribute to the town's growth. More than 350 ethnic German families from Bohemia (in today's Czech Republic) also settled in New Ulm. They spoke a Bohemian dialect of German, were primarily Catholic, and had distinct customs and social traditions. Today the German-Bohemian Heritage Society seeks to keep the contributions of their ancestors in the public eye.

The statue itself was created by German-Bohemian sculptor Leopold Hafner. The monument was dedicated in 1991. The polished granite base includes a text that describes the history of the German-Bohemians and a map showing where they originally came from. The names of more than 350 families are also listed on the pedestal.

The German-Bohemian Monument stands on German Street in German Park.
