I didn't mean to scoop up five of Boston's radio stations in one waymark, but they are all at the same location at 55 Morrissey Boulevard in the South Boston section of Boston.

All five are owned by Greater Media, Inc., a large owner of radio stations in major media cities such as Boston, Detroit, and New Jersey.

Like many other media, radio has gone through a cycle of upheaval. In Boston, commercial radio stations have been renamed, reformatted, and reshuffled. With the exception of Magic 106.7, these stations have gone through at least one major change.

I tend to be a station hopper in the car and have listened to three of these stations often. I'll list these first.

Of the list, my favorite is WROR, "The Songs You Grew Up With," which - sigh - (hate to admit when marketing tags me right) is true. This station features the morning program, "The Loren and Wally Morning Show," which has been on the air for over 25 years. The morning show features the team of Loren Owens, Walter "Wally" Brine, Sue Cope, Tom Doyle, and Hank Morse. Their 'regular features' include the "Bob Ryan Report" and "Bill Lee Report" (Sports), the "Men from Maine" skits, and the the Loren Science Reports. And, of course, they play 60s, 70s and some 80s music!

92-9 WBOS is a format completely in the other direction. It is almost all music, with brief interruptions for advertisement or call letter announcements, and plays progressive and alternative rock. The DJs are unintrusive, and, thus, there are no well known personalities. This present format has been around for about a year. Before that, WBOS was a contemporary rock station that had knowledgeable and dedicated DJs that provided insightful comments on the music played. On occasions they played local artists, as well. Though the present format is good, I liked it as it was better.

Country 102.5, WKLB, provides country music to the Boston area. Morning personalities include "JW", Lori Grande, and Hank Morse (wait a minute...that two-timer is on the Loren and Wally Morning Show as well...). WKLB was previously in the frequency slot that WROR presently has.

Magic 106.7 is the easy listening station and prides itself as having the longest running format of any Boston radio station and the number 1 FM station in Boston. They seem to concentrate more on music than personalities.

WTKK is an FM talk station in Boston. They feature national people like Don Imus and Michael Graham, and local people like Jim Braude, Margery Eagan, Jay Severin, and Michele McPhee.

Each one of these stations has their own web site, and their own link where you can click and listen over the internet - but you have to submit your email address.

So, if you're in Boston, try one of these stations - hop around!
