Hermann, also known by his Latin name Arminius, is a legendary figure in German history. In 9 AD he led united Germanic forces against the Romans in the Battle of the Teutobergerwald. The combined Germanic tribes wiped out three Roman legions and effectively ended Roman campaigns east of the Rhine and north of the Danube.
In 1841 construction began on a massive monument to Hermann near the German city of Detmold. It was finally completed in 1875, and just 10 years later a similar monument was conceived for New Ulm. The New Ulm Hermann was completed in 1897.
Known officially as the "Hermann Heights Monument" (and unofficially as "Hermann the German"), the New Ulm Hermann has a total height of 102 feet. The statue itself is 32 feet tall and is constructed much like the Statue of Liberty, with hammered copper over an iron armature.
In 2000 the U.S. Congress designated the Hermann Heights Monument to be an official symbol of all U.S. citizens of German heritage.
