Commissioned in 1899, this Memorial to the Confederate dead was begun in 1901 and unveiled in 1903. The cost was $20,000. It consists of a bronze figure of Jefferson Davis, holding a scroll in his proper left hand, standing atop a high tiered granite pedestal flanked at the lower corners by four bronze figures representing the Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery, and Navy. Etched in the base are the 13 states which withdrew from the Union and formed the Southern Confederacy, as well as the battles fought between 1861 and 1865. The memorial was designed by Frank Teich, who constructed the base. Pompeo Coppini, who had been working for Roman Bronze Works, came to Texas to model the four Confederate servicemen.
