The Nolichuckey River, which runs outside of Johnson City, TN, is rich in history as well as resources. For more than 100 years, the riverbed has been a source of "river rock," which is an indigenous stone used for building in the area. Dating back as far as 1902, the material was used to clad the entire exterior facade of St. John's Episcopal Church in downtown Johnson City, which opened its doors in 1904. More recently, the river rock was quarried from the same location to be used for an addition to the landmark church.
