The beacon in adjacent to a fire watch tower and can be accessed via a 100 metre walk up a steep set of steps from the car park on the summit. It offers great views over the plains below.

Mt Arapiles was named by Sir Major Thomas Mitchell when he ascended it in 1836.

There is a second older trig marker located on the walk adjacent to the lookout.
