Helena's first airport began its life near the fairgrounds, on land that is now occupied by the Bill Roberts Golf Course. Conflicts between golfers and aviators resulted in the development of a new airport at the present day location. It was officially dedicated in July of 1928. National Parks Airways began service in that year, which was later overtaken by Western Airlines in 1937.
In 1933 Amelia Earhart landed in Helena, working on a contract for Northwest Airlines to develope new passenger routes in the west. Northwest Airlines began service to Helena in 1936.
In the 1930s and 1940s, the airport began a period of rapid growth. The construction of the south terminal (now gone) was a WPA project. Later an FAA control tower was added and an outside baggage claim. These buildings were demolished in 2006, however, the area can be visited at N 46 36.142 W 111 59.714
The newest remodel of Helena Regional Airport began in 2004 and included many new updates, including additinal parking, new baggage
screening areas for TSA, office and administrative space as well as new emergancey response facilities.
