Long Description:
The Bruce Trail was the creation of Raymond Lowes and is one of
only 15 areas in Canada listed as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
Dating back to its inception of 1960 it is the oldest and longest
footpath in Canada. Divided into 9 primary sections, the Bruce
Trail is managed by volunteer clubs who help maintain the trail and
raise funds to acquire lands with a focus towards the 'optimal
route' but also those that exemplify the natural beauty which is
best viewed on trail.
Main trail markers are white, and side trail markers are blue.
Both use the same standard symbols to denote turns, a single
rectangle meaning continue forward and a double rectangle with one
elevated to indicate the turn direction. At all times you should be
able to see the next trail marker from the previous one. The trail
itself, as noted previously, is a dynamic trail under frequent
realignment as new sections of the optimal route are secured, new
permissions from land owners are granted or other trail changes are
required.
If you are searching for excellent hiking, with beautiful flora
and fauna or geological features like waterfalls or strata, then
this is the trail for you. There is additional information found in
various Internet searches, but the site
Out-There.com has a very informative area
dedicated to the Bruce Trail, its features and opportunities.
