En el tercio inferior de la ladera sur de Peña Carazo, la que mira hacia el pueblo, y donde nace el río Mataviejas, destaca una cornisa calcárea bajo la cual se abren, casi juntas, un par de galerías. Lo hacen prácticamente en el contacto entre bancos de margas y margocalizas nodulosas del Turoniense y, por encima, estratos de calizas del Coniaciense, ambos de edad Cratácico superior. El interior de Peña Carazo o de Villanueva de Carazo posee un sistema kárstico de amplio desarrollo con numerosas aberturas al exterior, las más conocidas de las cuales se abren en la ladera que da hacia la localidad de Ahedo, en la vertiente norte.

English version

In the lower third of the slope south of Peña Carazo, which overlooks the village, where the river is born Mataviejas stresses under a limestone ledge which was open, almost together, a couple of galleries.
