"The city said today that its City Hall has been rated as platinum, the top green-building rating using the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) by the U.S. Green Building Council.
The rating means San Jose now has 700,000 square feet of building space that qualifies as green. The goal of the Mayor Reed’s Green Vision is 50 million square feet of both public and private green buildings by 2022.
The rating was accomplished with energy conservation, reduced water use, a reduction and diversion of waste, a healthier indoor environment and the purchasing of green cleaning products and office supplies, according to a city press release.
City Hall was rated under the LEED-EB, or existing building standards. The city notes that the West Valley Branch Library, the Central Service Yard, Fire Station No. 35 and the Camden Community Center are new buildings constructed since 2004 that earn LEED green ratings." (
