The History of Pineville Community Hospital
Ground was broken for Pineville Community Hospital on September 16, 1937. The first patients were received May 12, 1938. At that time the hospital contained 40 beds and an active medical staff of five physicians. The five doctors were Dr. Edward Wilson, Sr., Dr. Edward Wilson, Jr., Dr. J.M. Brooks, Dr. George Asher and Dr. Charles B. Stacy. PCH, a not-for-profit facility, is operated by a Board of Directors consisting of members of our medical staff as well as businessmen and civic leaders within the community. The PCH Board is dedicated to providing the community with the highest quality medical care available at the lowest possible cost.

Over the years, Pineville Community Hospital has expanded to meet the growing needs of Southeast Kentucky. The latest expansion was completed in the summer of 200. The addition consisted of an In-Patient Pharmacy, classrooms, dayroom and storage area. In 1987-1989, the hospital completed a $5.5 million dollar project which provided a new surgical suite, new intensive care- cardiac unit, new pediatrics section complete with playroom, new storeroom and sterile central supply. As the needs of the area increase, PCH has been at the forefront of technology in meeting those needs. In 1991, two procedures were added to the surgical program: laparoscopic cholecystectomy and electrohydraulic lithotripsy. In 1996 an Ophthalmologist joined the staff, adding eye surgery. In 1991-1993, radiology was revamped with new nuclear medicine facilities, new CT-scan, new ultrasound and a mammography unit. In December of 2004 the Radiology went filmless, except for Mammography, with the installiation of CPSI’s ImageLink pacs.

Currently, PCH has 150 beds (120 Acute, 30 NF), 12 bassinets and operates a Home Health Agency. In addition to the nursing areas, the physical plant includes an administrative suite, business offices, purchasing department, surgery suite, kitchen and dining area, in and outpatient pharmacies, respiratory therapy including EKG and EEG, physical therapy, patient representative, radiology, engineering plant, medical records unit, quality improvement and social services offices, delivery rooms, emergency room suite, clinical and anatomical pathology laboratories, conference rooms, in-service library, patient library (volunteer staffed), several waiting areas and a gift shop.

In its continuing effort to provide the best in services and accommodations, PCH has upgraded its parking facilities and added a skywalk to link the hospital with the parking areas. The hospital has also underwent the installation of a hospital wide data processing system.

At present, the active staff is comprised of more than 15 physicians. An additional 48 physicians comprise the courtesy and consulting staffs. The hospital is also staffed by more than 350 employees serving in nursing, technical, administrative and support capacities. Expertise is available in the following areas: anesthesiology, cardiology, colorectal surgery, dermatology, emergency medicine, family practice, gastroenterology, general surgery, gynecology, internal medicine, obstetrics, opthalmology, orthopedic surgery, pathology, pediatrics, radiology and urology.

Committed to education, PCH maintains affiliations with the RN and Laboratory Tech programs at Lincoln Memorial University, the LPN and X-Ray Tech programs at Cumberland Valley Health Technology Center and Southeast Community College School of Nursing. Each of these programs utilize PCH for their clinical rotations. PCH is also affiliated with the Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine for the clinical training of their students. PCH has been providing quality care to the people of southeast Kentucky since 1938. Let us assist you with your healthcare needs
