Tinker Air Force Base (AFB) is named in honor of Native American and Oklahoman General Clarence L. Tinker. The General was the first Native American promoted to the rank of Major General. General Tinker was killed in the line-of-duty, while leading a flight of LB-30 "Liberators" on a long-range strike against Japanese forces on Wake Island during the early months of World War II.
Tinker AFB was conceived in the 1940's when the military was searching for a logistics base in the center of the United States. In April 1941 the order was officially signed starting the process to construct the depot.
Today, approximately 27,000 civilians and military personnel work at Tinker AFB. This makes Tinker the largest, single-site employeer in Oklahoma.
The largest organization within Tinker AFB is the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center (OC-ALC). The OC-ALC consists of four wings for support.
The first is Staff and Home Offices, an organization for command and coordnation between all other wings of the ALC.
The second is 72nd Air Base Wing provides base support functions.
Third, the 76th Maintenance Wing, the largest wing at the base, performs various levels of maintenance on the C/KC-135, B-1B, B-52, E-3, Navy E-6, F100, F101, F108, F110, F118, F119 and TF33 engines for the Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, Navy and foreign military.
Finally, the 327th Aircraft Sustainment Wing
provides management of several aircraft through out the life span.
Tinker AFB also houses eight other units.
The 448th Supply Chain Management Wing provides supply support throughout the Air Force.
The 552nd Air Control Wing flies the E-3 Sentry aircraft. The E-3's radar and other sensors provide surveillance and airborne battle management.
The Navy's Strategic Communications Wing ONE provides secure communications for the fleet of ballistic missile submarines.
The 507th Air Refueling Wing is a Reserve unit. The Wing provides support for U.S. Military and NATO aircraft with aerial refueling and Airborne Warning and Control System missions world-wide.
The 3rd Combat Communications Group provides deployable communications, computer systems, navigational aids and air traffic control services anywhere in the world.
The 38th Engineering Installation Group has worldwide responsibility for engineering and installation of all communications and electronic facilities for the Air Force.
The Defense Distribution Depot Oklahoma provides materiel support for OC-ALC and other Tinker-based organizations.
The Defense Information Security Agency Defense Enterprise Computing Center, Oklahoma City, is the local organization of the Defense Information Systems Agency. DISA operates computer systems for the base and serves 172 other bases in all 50 states plus 92 foreign countries.
