They are attractive statues on what is also known as the Grecian Temple. It was begun in 1747 possibly by Richard Grenville who was later to become Lord Temple. Then Giovanni Borra, a continental architect, altered it a few years later. Victory, the main statue, was added in 1749 which was when Lord Cobham, owner of Stowe, died.
It was only in 1762 that the temple was completed. The original statues were made of lead apart from Victory and were sold in 1921. The ones we see today are rather fine copies.
