The National Trust describes these statues:
'The Seven Saxon Deities were used to represent ancient notions of liberal government that the Saxons supposedly brought to Britain. They are the Gods that gave their names to the days of the week - Sunna, Mona, Tiw, Woden, Thuner, Friga and Seatern.'
The statues are in a semi-circle in this small grass clearing. They were originally made by Rysbrack in about 1727. The statues we see today are copies as the originals were sold in 1921. There are only six in position at the moment as the middle plinth is empty.
