The first USS Maine, was a second-class pre-dreadnought battleship (launched in 1889, sometimes referred to as an armored cruiser) whose sinking by an explosion, either internal or by a Spanish mine, on February 15, 1898 at 9:40 p.m., precipitated the Spanish-American War.
